Now, at the end of the modern age, the success of that
missionary project (and especially of the apprehension of the gospel along the indigenous side of the
line between
missionary and convert) emerges
as perhaps the most important factor in world Christian life today.
That was followed by their global hit «Viva La Vida» which is full of Christian symbolism
as it references the bells of Jerusalem,
missionaries in a foreign field, but also the cryptic
line «I know St Peter won't call my name» which has always struck me
as challenging.

missionaries who are routinely disliked because of what they do and how they behave) part of a larger political situation where religion is used
as a nationalistic demarcation
line.
And while this has helped stem the tide of decline —
as well
as reinvigorate the church's
missionary zeal (the famous
line from Cardinal Hickey of Washington, quoted by Kathleen, «we don't education [urban] students because THEY are Catholic, but because WE are»)-- it has also dampened the Church's once - powerful religious belief system.
