Notoriously baffling yet oddly compelling, 2001: A Space Odyssey essentially follows two
astronauts (Keir Dullea's Dave Bowman and Gary
Lockwood's Frank Poole)
as they embark on a quest into the farthest reaches of the known galaxy.
The problem is that what it deems
as rational behaviour entails the «termination» of the hibernating
astronauts,
as well
as Bowman's partner, Frank Poole (Gary
Lockwood).
Notice the indifference with which Gary
Lockwood's
astronaut receives an interplanetary birthday greeting from Earth,
as well
as the perfunctory birthday call William Sylvester's scientist makes to his young daughter while en route to the moon.
The final two acts of 2001 seemed to race by,
as we met
astronauts Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea), Frank Poole (Gary
Lockwood) and their guiding super computer HAL 9000.
