When I visited I travelled from Kuta to Seminyak to Ubud and then out of Bali onto the Gili Islands and
Lombok via boat.

Gili Trawangan is connected to Bali (Padang Bai and Benoa harbour) and Nusa Lembongan by fast
boat, to
Lombok via fastboat and slowboat (latter to Bangsal town) and to neighbouring Gili Meno and Gili Air by both public
boat and chartered
boat.
There are also regular fast
boat services between the Gili Islands on the northwest coast of
Lombok with Amed, Padang Bai and Sanur (
via Nusa Lembongan) in Bali.
Gili Air is the closest of the islands to
Lombok and the break is accessible
via a long paddle or you can head there on a
boat.
Or Mataram (LOP),
Lombok then make your way to Gili Islands
via a short
boat transfer.
Many people visit this area
via fast
boat although it is possible if you are on a tight budget to take the public ferry to
Lombok and then take a bemo or bus to the port that leads to the Gili Islands which is a days journey although it will save you the $ 50
boat cost and will mean you will experience the main land of
Lombok as well.
The first tourists arrived in 1978 to Gili Air when Haji Burhanuddin transported two Dutch backpackers
via traditional fishing
boat from
Lombok.
The Gilis can also be approached
via mainland
Lombok through the
boat landing at Bangsal, which in turn is easily reached from a sinking star of
Lombok's tourism scene, Senggigi.
Transport to the 3 islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air is easy by daily direct fast
boat, domestic and international flights with airport transfers
via Lombok, or the Perama live aboard will take you to see the Komodo dragons.
It is also possible to get to
Lombok via ferry or
boats which leave from Padang Bai on Bali.
