If a slim waist has been your dream for
long but you don't feel
like it's possible to achieve because it seems
like too much work (and let's be honest, you're more on the lazy side), don't worry, you just haven't found the right workout yet — you've probably been reading too much of those articles that praise the fat loss benefits of
long, slow
cardio sessions or the magical powers of endless series of crunches, and you don't really think you've got the nerves for that.
The trick here is to either do
longer but less intense
cardio sessions,
like 30 - 45 minutes of high pace walking or 30 minutes of riding a bike at a slower pace 3 to 4 times a week, or you can do short (15 - 20 minute), intense interval workouts (HIIT, tabata or fartlek training) 2 - 3 times a week on non-weightlifting days.
I do
long cardio sessions because it makes me a better competitor, but I also do HIIT -
like work — we just call it Vo2 max intervals.
I was also able to go for a
longer cardio session at a higher intensity than normal and
like I said I was almost looking for more to do in the gym.
Long story short I gave up all the
cardio and cut it back to 2
sessions per week of HIIT training (High Intensity Interval Training) and introduced compound exercises
like squats, deadlifts, press ups, bench press and lunges, kettlebell training and TRX.
Eat to fuel for Zumba just
like you would for a
long run or
cardio session.
If you are trying to look
like a super hero, extra
cardio sessions (or
long distance
cardio sessions) will kill your gains.
They're quick but intense, so perfect for busy days or to pair with low (er) intensity steady - state
cardio like a
long walk or elliptical
session.
Although it will take a
longer amount of time to burn the same amount of calories as an interval
session, lower - intensity
cardio still offers important benefits
like building the aerobic system and promoting recovery.
