Evaporation rates can vary according to local climates and cultivation pond size, but the larger point is that water consumption is dramatically
lower than for soybean cultivation and the water can be recycled three to four times.
There are some various proposed mechanisms to explain this that involve the surface energy balance (e.g., less coupling between the ground temperature and
lower air temperature over land because of less potential for
evaporation), and also lapse
rate differences over ocean and land (see Joshi et al 2008, Climate Dynamics), as well as vegetation or cloud changes.
Most certainly, however since we are in an inverted lapse
rate at sea compared to the atmosphere the upper layers will not warm / thermal diffuse the
lower layers due to a density problem induced by the temperature differences, hence the uppermost molecules will be agitated the most, which will lead to...
evaporation.
For example, as the
lower atmosphere becomes warmer,
evaporation rates will increase, resulting in an increase in the amount of moisture circulating throughout the troposphere (
lower atmosphere).
The main message of the figure below is that the precipitation and
evaporation increase at a much
lower rate than Clausius — Clapeyron would predict, about 2 - 4 % per degree K.
For these reasons, one shouldn't put much faith in the argument that estimates of
evaporation rate changes, with temperature, show that the climate sensitivity is as
low as Lindzen and Monckton are claiming.
Also, if the vegetation changes substantially —
low grass to shrubs and trees - then this could change water
evaporation rates around the station and alter air temperatures.
ii) At the same time it increases
evaporation and therefore net cooling in SST (int) which increases the flow through the
lower layers again thus cancelling i) for a zero net effect on the
rate of energy flow from the subskin.
Where there is no solar radiation, thesurface energy balance shows that the back radiation is less than the heat loss due to emission,
evaporation and convection.Hence the surface temperature and
evaporation rate are
lower.
