Further interior features included in the M Sports Package comprise, inter alia, an M leather - clad steering wheel,
an M gear lever knob, the M footrest, an anthracite BMW Individual roof lining and M aluminium hexagon interior trim strips.

As predicted, the strength of the V6
is its incredible pick up, regardless of revs, and so keen
is it in a low
gear that a pre-emptive tag of the upshift
lever is required in manual mode if you
're not to snag the limiter.
Then again, such
is the torque of the mighty V10, and so long the intermediate
gearing, you can just slot the
lever between third and fourth and summon enough urge for any occasion.
Even the base ST1
is fitted front Recaro sports seats, contrast piping, carbon fibre trim, extra gauges on the dash, a sports steering wheel, metal pedals, a metal
gear lever and a generous distribution of ST badges throughout the cabin.
The buttons to select the stability, damping, and transmission modes
are alongside the
gear selector — a console - mounted
lever rather than the wimpy column shifter in the standard E-class.
There
's simply no learning curve to driving the Conti GT; you just put your foot on the brake, slide the
gear lever into Drive, and go.
And then there
's the way the gearbox operates, slicing up or down through the ratios with a speed and precision that you couldn't hope to replicate with a third pedal and conventional
gear -
lever.
The powertrains feature stop / start with a defeat button, and they
are mated to VW's six - speed direct - shift
gear (DSG) transmission, with a shift - by - wire selector
lever on the left side of the center console.
There
are two points which could cause your car to move if you start the engine: the clutch failing to disengage when you step on the pedal and the transmission failing to come out of

The shifter
is fantastic - stubby
lever, quick throws — but I find the dogleg first
gear, down and left, a bit strange.
The transfer case on some vehicles, particularly those intended for off - road use,
are engaged by a separate
gear lever or electric buttons or a rotary switch on the dashboard.
The center stack accommodates the MMI and navigation controls, auxiliary instruments, a row of classic rocker switches, a push - button parking brake, and a U-shaped metal

Purists would love to see a six - or seven - speed manual

The position of the
gear lever is excellent; it
's up high and close to the steering wheel.
Prominent chrome switches
are littered throughout the cabin, the
gear shift
lever still has a collar around its base to change the car's behaviour (one of the most effective, intuitive switches we've used for such a system) and an iDrive - style controller in the centre console controls functions on the disappointingly square screen inside that circular dash feature.
Most everything you touch feels rich (which
was not necessarily the case with the last FX), from the magnesium shift
levers to the weighty
gear selector.
The seating position
is now fractionally lower, and the rising center console places the
gear lever closer to the driver's right hand.
Top down, we pull the gearshift
lever into
S mode, grab the steering - wheel - mounted paddles, and rip up and down through the
gears, making the optional sport exhaust bark and howl, causing teenage onlookers to beckon for more.
If you mean it isn't starting when it
's in
gear with the clutch disengaged, check to see if there
's a pin switch on the clutch
lever housing that
's gotten stuck.
A tinny, plastic - capped key makes the twelve cylinders fire instantly, but idle
is rough, the
gear lever is stubborn, the clutch indifferent, and the steering slack; meanwhile, visibility to the rear
is practically nonexistent, and head - and legroom
are seriously compromised.
The seven - speed automatic operates with flawless logic (holding
gears indefinitely if the
lever is first moved into manual mode, returning to Drive after a few moments if it
's not).
This will take up a lot of adjustment so you can take that rack
gear that
's in there and skip a tooth on it so the clutch engagement arm
is properly positioned on your clutch cover to have the maximum throw when you pull in the clutch
lever.
Inside, there
are Porsche's Sports Seats Plus, with electric adjustment and alcantara - trimmed centres, and the synthetic suede - like material
is also used for the steering wheel,
gear lever and centre console.
It
's a great way to cruise around — you can
be lazy and let the torque do the work or if you want to go faster you can stir the long - throw
gear lever and go pretty rapidly in a straight line — just don't expect it to
be hugely rewarding on the twisty bits.
The five - speed manual transmission has that long - lost shift quality that only Ferraris of a certain age can deliver: a deliberate, weighty feel that
's initially tight as you take the
lever out of one
gear, then frees up as you cross the gate before tightening once more as the next
gear slots home.
I believe I first ran it at a test at Paul Ricard and the principle
was brilliant; just keep pulling the
lever back and it will drop into the next
gear.
Check the
gear linkage and make sure the
lever lengths, ball joint size etc
are the same (or swap yours over).
The wood - topped
gear lever is a full arm - stretch away, with first
gear on a dogleg.
Little more than a slight
gear -
lever vibration confirms the thing
is actually on, and it
's not until you prod the throttle heavily that a deep three - pot tone reaches into the cabin.
Then all you have to do
is stage, put the clutch and accelerator pedals to the floor, and slot the
gear lever into first.
