Paula, we added a 6 ″
MDF board cut to the size of the width of the top of the doorway, and then we topped it with a decorative crown moulding.

Next, we took some
MDF board from the Home Depot and
cut it to fit the inside walls of the armoire.
I have
cut the
MDF board to size and ordered the trim for the frame.
I have the same dilemma and my thought was to attach a
board such as plywood or
MDF to the mantle and
cut out where the vent would be.
Instead of using a plywood
board that is ripped (
cut) into 6 inch strips, I opted to use the pre-
cut MDF shiplap at The Home Depot this time.
