MOBI file works on All Kindle Devices and tablets (and can also suit Mobile Phones, Blackberry, Palm, IRex, ILiad, BeBook), while fixed layout file for Kindle will only work on certain Kindle devices.

Amazon also produce a free Kindle app (for
mobi files) which
works on a similar range of devices.
There are free — and easy to learn — programs available to do the conversions from your original
working file to EPUB or
MOBI formats.
It only
works for epub, so you'll need to save your epub and remake a new
mobi file.
Scrivener allows you to convert your
work into all the
file types required by the different publishing platforms, including
mobi files for Kindle using the KindleGen tool from Amazon.
I don't understand why not but any way I use Jutoh to make my epub and
mobi files and it
works pretty good.
All I did was to export mine to to a
MOBI format and send the
file to Amazon, and low and behold it
worked perfectly with no problems.
While Calibre is capable of
working with an external CSS
file, there is a limit to the CSS that is supported by both ePub and
Mobi formats.
Calibre will generate an epub or
mobi file, and it provides a dizzying array of options to customize the ebook, but there is no guarantee that this book will
work on all the devices or be accepted by the stores and distributors.
I just export the
mobi file and can
work on the draft on my iPad or just read it where it already actually looks like a book.
This
works by allowing you to add
MOBI and PRC
files into the Kindle library from Mail attachments or other apps that support the iOS feature which allows you to open
files in other apps.
While the floating images
work fine in ePub
files, they do not
work in
mobi.
I'll try to see if I can find a way that
works reliably in
mobi files also.

worked with metadata and distribution channels, and validated and performed a quality check on all

Every author can choose between downloading the ePub and
Mobi files of their book for a small fee or letting us do all the
work for 10 % of net royalties.
I have to say — I put
mobi files on my kindle without converting them all the time, and they
work fine.
Since some websites limit the types of
files allowed, I wasn't sure if Facebook with play nicely with a Kindle
mobi file attachment, but it
worked well.
Keep in mind that there are hundreds of ways to create
mobi files that vary widely in results, and most
work perfectly well, especially if you're creating an ebook
file of a plain text — or nearly plain text — novel or story.
The Kindle plug - in for InDesign
works well for what it does, but it is only useful if you are using ID to build a document with the single purpose of exporting that
file to
MOBI for use on the Kindle Fire.

work with Kindle devices and Kindle apps.
So if I'm understanding correctly, the footnotes are
working correctly with
MOBI files, but not with AZW
files.
Finally, in order for this to
work the ebook (
mobi)
files have to be sent in a DRM - free format.
The Boox's reading apps supports DRM - free PRC and
MOBI files, so it's not going to
work for Kindle ebooks 95 % of the time unless you happen to get one without DRM, and even then I think the apps download AZW.
In the early beta versions of the KindleGen 2 tool for KF8, there was no way to make the hanging indents
work properly in
Mobi while still making a valid KF8
file, so I complained to Amazon about the need for a CSS - driven option using media queries.
I ask this because Amazon recently released the «Kindle Previewer» that allows me to import an ePub
file, spits out a
mobi file, and shows me what the
work will look like in a few of their readers.
You can not edit the
MOBI file directly with Sigil, since this format is proprietary to Amazon and they are very reluctant about sharing how it
works.
