The four character classes supply a ranged class and
a mage class, two melee fighter classes.
If reclassing characters, do not reclass a front line warrior into
a mage class; Look at their stats and try and decide what role they fit best in, or pick a character to reclass that can fill a role in your combat party that may be vacant.
As for the new Red
Mage class, it's a ranged DPS role with rapiers and magicked crystal mediums as its weapons of choice.
The exception to this is his Magic stat which is the highest of the cast, which should make him the best Ravager in the game, as this is XIII's equivalent to the Black
Mage class.

a Mage class is pretty self - explanatory as an option.
