Magic attacks bring some extra depth, though, as you buff up your forces, weaken the enemy and maybe even try to deter their movement with a well placed wall of fire.

The Devourer can
bring along three additional puppets and it is up to the player to decide between the three kinds of
attacks (melee, ranged,
magic), between different types of elemental damage (earth, wind, fire, water), or between different tactical configurations (ranged, heavily armored, fast movement).
You have full control of one character at a time — so, if you are controlling Edge then you hit X to
attack or the shoulder buttons to use pre-defined skill
attacks whilst you can also press triangle to
bring up a menu to use
magic, skills and items.
You have your basic
attack mapped to the square button, your
magic to the circle button, triangle to
bring forth your character's special move (if you have one), and the L / R triggers are used to dash back and forth (if the required rune is equipped).
However, the game is not merely a hack and slash fest, you can use ranged
attacks and
bring various angelic and demonic magical
attacks into battle with status effect spells to reduce damage from enemies, mid-range
magic projectiles and area effect
magic attacks.
Each character
brings with them their signature Persona, used in combat for powerful
magic attacks and extending combos.
