The most common dog elbow pathologies are Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), Osteoarthritis (OA), Osteochondrosis Dessecans (OCD), Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP), Fragmented Coronoid Process (FCP) and
Medial Compartment Disease.
Another treatment option is an implant that replaces
the medial compartment of the elbow, where disease is most common, with a synthetic joint surface.
This novel procedure is used to treat larger breed dogs with elbow dysplasia and diseases of
the medial compartment before they develop severe arthritis of the elbow.
Elbow Dysplasia that develops as a result of one or a combination of OCD, FCP, and Elbow incongruency is referred to as
Medial Compartment Syndrome.
The current technique involves initial arthroscopy to document that the articular cartilage wear was limited to
the medial compartment of the elbow joint.
Many dogs improve, especially in the short - term to this surgery, however as arthritis and collapse of
the medial compartment progresses many of these dogs will become clinically lame again.
Treatments range from medical treatments (I will outline these below since they are similar for all cases of elbow dysplasia) to removing the fragment (s) and cleaning up the adjacent bone, through to procedures that realign the elbow joint to decrease strain / pressure on the abnormal
medial compartment of the joint (with FCPS the
medial compartment of the joint collapse resulting in further strain pressure and pain in the elbow).
Results found that 1g of turmeric given twice daily resulted in: • reduced MRI evidence of muscle injury in the posterior and
medial compartment of both thighs, • less pain in the lower legs, and • reduced systemic inflammatory response in comparison to placebo.2
