If both teams had brought their A game then Chelsea would still have won, but with Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel out, Shkodran Mustafi potentially out and Per
Mertesacker playing at the back I would be shocked if Arsenal got a result.

back, meaning Calum Chambers can move centrally to fill in for the absent Koscielny alongside Per
Mertesacker, moving Nacho Monreal
back to his favoured left - sided position to replace Gibbs after a few unsuccessful games in the middle for Wenger's side.
Now that
Mertesacker has basically said that he is ready to retire from the
playing side
at Arsenal, maybe Chambers has learned enough from the BFG to take his place in the Arsenal
back line.
In the Monaco game we are going to need all the pace we can get
at the
back, it's going to be a risky game for us as we have to start well and we are going to go for it, this means we will be exposed
at the
back, that is where we need 2 quick central defenders, Kossy and Gabriel can look after themselves on the counter, but
Mertesacker has no chance, so I think if we
play Merte then we ain't got a chance
at all, they will counter on us and due to him being slow.
We know that we are also without Hector Bellerin and Per
Mertesacker until the New Year, and it seems that Danny Welbeck will not be
back before then either as Le Prof said he is «
at least four weeks away from
playing again.»
I would also not be against starting Chambers
at DM for this game; he has earned a spot in the starting 11 but if Koscielny and
Mertesacker are both fit to
play they should take their starting jobs
back; starting Chambers
at DM will give him good experience in the role and with our preferred CB pairing behind him he won't have to worry about being perfect in that role.
Coquelin did all the dirty work in midfield, tracking
back, being the first defender and covering
at the
back to give time for the more forward players to come help and for the defence to organise (
Mertesacker never found himself outrun... against City) breaking up
plays and cleanly passing the ball forward!!
If we sell Gabriel we are left with Koscielny,
Mertesacker, Monreal, Holding, Mustafi, Kolasinac who can all
play at the
back 3.
Of course Santi Cazorla is unlikely to get a shirt number
at the start of the season, and Per
Mertesacker has told us he wants a
back room role rather than a
playing position.
He is still the Arsenal club captain and as far as we know the former Germany international Per
Mertesacker has recovered fully from his injury and is fit enough to
play, although the tall centre
back was not included on the subs bench for Arsenal's draw with Man City
at the weekend.
Would be nice not to have to watch
Mertesacker bumbling around and have some real pace
at the
back Then either or both CB's could move forward for set
plays.

Laurent Koscielny has
played in every game in all competitions so far, so it would be ideal to rest the Frenchman by moving Callum Chambers to join Per
Mertesacker at central defence and bringing in Hector Bellerin
at right -

In my opinion, we all know that
Mertesacker was not
at his best after returning from the World Cup, but he has
played in nearly every game for the Gunners this season, with ever - changing partners in the
back four.

played out of his position yet peeps are blindly attacking him but never point out the managers fault.

at no 10 and put Ramsey
at his best position.If you wont do this and you want to continue to tread the wrong path

at box to box and bench Ramsey and lets see how this thing survives and peeps are complaining about tippy tappy football infront of goal.Men!!
If the problem worsens or if Wenger thinks it is too risky then he may decide not to
play the Bosnian and one of the first options to replace him in that left wing
back role would be Nacho Monreal, but the Spaniard is also the first choice for the left sided of three players
at the
back and without Koscielny that leaves Holding or Mustafi with
Mertesacker in the middle.
So with Per
Mertesacker unable to
play every game and with Laurent Koscielny managing an ongoing Achilles problem, Wenger may have decided that the Gunners do need more cover
at the
back.
But Wenger insists he is ready to
play under fire Calum Chambers
at centre -
back again if Per
Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny do not recover from illness and injury.
Podolski and
Mertesacker both made their debuts
back in 2004 and have been
playing together
at Arsenal since 2012.
Mertesacker was written off by many as being past it, but he came
back strong in the second half of the season as he reached the impressive levels he
played at for most of the previous season.
Playing Bellerin
at full -
back allows Wenger to have both Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal as potential centre -
back cover for Laurent Koscielny and Per
Mertesacker.
For example, take the game
at Stoke, both Holding and
Mertesacker were fit yet Wenger decided to
play two lefts
backs in a three or take the defeat against Liverpool, you might only have one chance to score yet elect to drop your prolific striker, these decisions are not rationale and not logical.
Against Fulham, Sagna will have to
play alongside
Mertesacker, with Jenkinson
at right
back.
