In one scheme, for example, prosecutors accused Silver
of pulling strings to award state money to a
mesothelioma researcher at Columbia, who would then route
mesothelioma victims to his own
law firm, netting him millions in referral bonuses.
As the criminal complaint against Silver alleges, he used his authority to disburse HCRA grants to enrich himself, directing hundreds
of thousands
of dollars to renowned Columbia University physician Dr. Robert Taub for the completion
of a center to study
mesothelioma, a rare cancer that can be caused by asbestos exposure, in exchange for Taub's agreement to direct clients with cancer to Silver's
law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, which specializes in lucrative asbestos lawsuits.
Silver, who was
of counsel for the Manhattan
law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg, was accused
of helping steer state grants to a doctor who funneled
mesothelioma patients to the
law firm.
Mr. Molo, in rejecting the government's charge that his client's actions were illegal, said Mr. Silver's referrals
of patients with asbestos claims to the
law firm Weitz & Luxenberg was a means
of getting «economic justice» for them, many
of whom were blue - collar workers who had «unfairly and unjustly» contracted
mesothelioma, a particularly deadly form
of cancer, through work with asbestos.
Prosecutors on Tuesday showed the jury emails from Taub that suggested the then - Columbia University cancer doctor secretly disdained Silver and his
law firm as part
of a dog - eat - dog crowd that merely sought to get rich off
mesothelioma, a rare form
of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
Silver was also found guilty last week
of steering $ 500,000 worth
of state Department
of Health grants to
mesothelioma research being conducted by Dr. Robert Taub

When Silver's acquaintance Dr. Robert Taub started dropping unmissable hints that he wanted Silver to fund his

of the $ 8.5 million annual Health Care Reform Act stashes and started doling it out.
Silver's attorneys, for instance, argued there was nothing wrong with the speaker steering state grants toward potentially life - saving
mesothelioma research — or Silver then referring patients who had been exposed to asbestos to the personal injury

of counsel» — an arrangement that brought the patients «economic justice» (along with millions in referral fees for Silver).

of dollars from representing

mesothelioma research,» federal prosecutors wrote in the new court papers, which were filed Monday.
For several jurors among the group
of eight woman and four men, Mr. Silver's relationship with Dr. Taub, who referred
mesothelioma patients with potentially profitable legal claims to a
law firm that then paid Mr. Silver, seemed to come down to this: one man helping another out, just because he could.
