middle schools, gives students the flexibility to alternate their on - site enrichment activities with an additional «learning time» session, during which students receive individual
help on schoolwork from volunteers, many of whom are students at local
colleges.
Finally, viewed as a community asset, having an entire school of this sort to show parents,
colleges, employers, firms looking to relocate, real estate agents, and others can bring a kind of élan or appeal to a place that may also
help with economic development, the retention of
middle - class families, and more.
Other projects created during the class include an organization that will provide free public libraries in India; an online platform to
help students make more informed decisions when applying to
college; an app that gives students fun, game - based content that shows what real scientists are like; a cellphone - hosted service for rural teachers in the Philippines that provides direct training and tips; and a nonprofit that will train and employ parent liaisons to develop stronger bonds between families and
middle schools in an effort to improve dropout rates.
College prep and admissions are serious business, but gamifying the process may just
help middle and high school students understand the challenges and find solutions.
This report detailed the
college completion rates from the first two KIPP
middle schools and offered a clearer picture of the challenges students from low - income communities face on the path to a degree, as well as the factors that
help them succeed.
