This mobi file size is NOT what KDP uses to calculate the delivery fee; rather it uses the size of the component that gets delivered to the reader.

mobi files seem very large when compared to the EPUB
files, this extra
size is removed again once the book is distributed by Amazon.
What you need to know before you upload your
file: • Supported
file types: epub, doc, docx,
mobi, odt (
file size can not exceed 10 MB) • Kobo converts all
files to e-pub format • If your
file is a doc, docx,
mobi, or odt, check Kobo's Conversion Guidelines to be sure that all formatting and chapter markers make it into the e-pub version.
For instance, an author can upload their Word
file to Kindle or Kobo and it will be converted to a
mobi or epub
file for them, but it will only be useable by Kindle or Kobo and it will come out in a one -
size - fits - all format without any opportunity to customize it.
But CAUTION: when uploading the epub, Amazon also retains a copy of the epub IN THE
mobi file — WHY, I don't know, but this can more than double the
size of your book, especially if it is graphic heavy..
When you see this, all you have to do is drag your
mobi file on top of this and you should be able to see your book, change the font, the font
size and all kinds of other neat things.
Due to the way the
MOBI / KF8
file is packaged by Kindlegen, the delivery
file size will always be smaller than the
MOBI / KF8
file you uploaded from your computer.
The maximum
size of a
MOBI file is 650 MB.
I can't really figure out why, there doesn't seem to be a significant difference between these and other
files (just
mobi files, no special chars in the filename, no exceptional
size...).
Send it to your Kindle email address and your PDF will be converted into a
Mobi file, where you can control the font
size and formatting.
Because your images can only be 800kb or smaller and your
mobi file had better darn well be under 50mb if you don't want Amazon to slap a big ugly (well it's not big I guess, but it looks scary and foreboding) warning on your sales page saying «Due to large
file size, this book may take longer than usual to download.»
For Kindle, Vellum creates a
MOBI file and a lot of people think that the
file size of the
MOBI file is what determines delivery costs, and that's not true at all.
All the
MOBI and PRC
files I tried were ripe with coding errors and there's only one small text
size.
