While so many
modern Sonic games feel like the last thing they want to be is a Sonic game, Sonic Rush recreates much of the charm the series was built on.
First off, Sonic Generations is being done on HD consoles to take full advantage of the hardware and to help bring back the hardcore gaming crowd that loved Sonic in the Genesis era, but hated the more
modern Sonic games.
That's especially true with
modern Sonic games, which don't always stick the landing.
They are once again trying to appeal to all sides of the fan base, instead of doing what they had originally planned and making the retro - styled Sonic installments for the resolute fans of the Genesis games and their respective stories and art style, and making modern - styled Sonic platformers for fans of
the modern Sonic games and their stories and character designs — this would have been a good plan had SEGA followed through on it; Sonic fans could have had their cake, and eaten it too.
Shun Nakamura: Really the core audience the team was trying to get is the people who like
those modern Sonic games - and even reaching beyond that core group of Sonic Fans, we created the create your own hero feature, and we're trying to get some of the younger kids who enjoy customising things.
This has become a staple of
Modern Sonic games, but while it was quite an impressive feature in the earlier games, it's become all too prevalent; huge sections of levels require you to hop between rails.
But if you can get behind the issue, Sonic Forces will be one of your favorite
modern Sonic games to date.
Forces continues the trend of
Modern Sonic games being very average and not even an injection boost like Classic Sonic or the new customisable Avatar character can save this from being average at best.
After reading his column, I can't say that I fully agree with him, but I can see where he is coming from, especially with
modern Sonic games:
Modern Sonic games have many issues, but how they control and handle sticks out to me as the most important one.
Here's the thing about Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, if you enjoy the gameplay found in
modern Sonic games, then there's a strong chance that you will also enjoy this.

a modern Sonic game has captured my excitement, but I see the disappointments classic Sonic fans could voice.

Sega took a chance in letting a longtime
Sonic fan and a few smaller dev teams bring the original 16 - bit iteration of their mascot back into the
modern era, and the result is
Sonic Mania, one of the purest and most enjoyable
Sonic games we've ever been given.
Even the side - scrolling
games, such as
Sonic 4, haven't been as well received as SEGA might have expected, but there's a good reason: SEGA hadn't ever attempted to actually recreate a classic
Sonic game, they kept throwing in gimmicks, using
modern moves (such as lock - on attacks) and making the levels with a more linear design.
SEGA, along with the excellent Christian «Taxman» Whitehead and Simon «Stealth» Thomley (responsible for the brilliant mobile ports of

Modern Sonic is fun when he's allowed to run at supersonic speeds, but most of the time the
game punishes him for doing so.
Sonic Forces is a
game which features both
modern Sonic gameplay and 2D levels and gives players the chance to design their own characters, while
Sonic Mania looks and plays like the classic
Sonic titles, and has been developed by teams known for their work in the
Sonic fan community.
Another area of
Sonic Mania that feels a bit out of touch with
modern game design is the instant deaths that result from being crushed by one of the
game's many moving platforms or objects.
Episode Shadow focuses on a backstory with Shadow and Infinite (the
game's mysterious antagonist), including three Shadow stages, the ability to replay as Shadow across 10
Modern Sonic stages, plus you'll also receive a Shadow costume for your Hero Character.
While nowhere near as problematic as Classic
Sonic, since a lot of 3D
Sonic games have rather «loose» controls and physics so there's no recent point of comparison,
Modern Sonic's controls were absolutely still an issue in Forces.
So you play as
Modern Sonic all through the
game.
