STATE OF THE AMERICAN WORKPLACE

In the
modern era, and perhaps in all of history, Jews have never been so secure as they are at
present in the United
States of America.
While the United
States bishops focused on nuclear war, a more general judgment about
modern war as inherently unjust had been
present in Catholic thought since at least 1870, the year when a group of bishops, in a Postulata addressed to Pope Pius XI and the First Vatican Council, excoriated the expense of «huge standing and conscript armies» and the prospect of «illegal and unjust wars, or rather hideous massacres spreading far and wide.»
If this aspect differed in kind in the case of Jesus from every other member of the species man, then in the
present state of our knowledge it would seem impossible rightly to describe Jesus as a man.17 It may be the case that most Christians (and most Christian theologians) in most centuries have accepted this claim: but most have not shared either our
modern sensitivity to the difference between history and mythology or our concern for the principles of logic.
They fondly recall Lyndon Johnson's inauguration of the
modern welfare
state, often bitterly denouncing conservative resistance, arguing that our
present political distempers flow from our failure to expand the scope and reach of the welfare
state.
This dreadful threat to their national community must have contributed considerable drive to the
present establishment of the
modern state of Israel.
Gertrude Himmelfarb, in The De-Moralization of Society: From Victorian Virtues to
Modern Values (1995),
states that «it was not until the
present century that morality became so thoroughly relativized that virtues ceased to be «virtues» and became «values.
If there is a profound disparity between the
present American economic system and basic American values, and if many Americans have so argued, then it is all the more surprising that some version of socialism, as the main alternative to capitalist economic organization in the
modern world, has not found favor in the United
States.
One recent Saturday, Mr. Cuomo, the former governor, showed up at his former residence, the Executive Mansion, and broached the unbroachable: before a crowd of about 100 relatives, friends and advisers gathered to mark his 80th birthday, he called his son, Andrew M. Cuomo, «the best governor in
modern times,» and, according to several of those
present, mused at length that the younger Mr. Cuomo might someday «have an opportunity to serve at a higher level, to serve the people of the United
States.»
Erin Crotty, acting commissioner of the
state Department of Environmental Conservation said, «The closure of Fresh Kills not only marks the culmination of years of effort to bring the
state into the age of
modern solid waste management practices, but
presents a tremendous opportunity to turn this blighted landscape into an environmental success story.»
He noted that the plight of Kogi
State workers today was like a dagger in his mind, saying that no responsible leader would allow workers to go home empty handed at the end of the month in this
modern age and chided the
present government for being economical with the truth over the bailout fund.
