The big drag
on value for American miles for international flights are
fuel surcharges on British Airways, which often cost
more than just buying the cheapest economy fare outright.
Sometimes it's worth paying
more miles to save
on fuel surcharges.
It is possible to save
on fuel surcharges by redeeming for Lufthansa First with other airlines, like United, but you'll end up spending a ton
more miles!
With Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia, things get
more expensive because many foreign carriers impose
fuel surcharges on award tickets.
Domestic flights within the U.S. don't have any
fuel surcharges, so you don't have to worry about this if you use Miles &
More to book a flight
on partners like United and US Airways within the United States.
Fuel surcharges are going to be significant if you want to fly British Airways in First Class, but using your miles is still a great way to access a ticket that would otherwise cost $ 5,000 or
more one - way — especially if you can pair your redemption with a Travel Together Ticket earned by spending
on British Airway's co-branded credit card.
Some things to bear in mind are that you will want to avoid flying
on British Airways operated flights as those come with very heavy
fuel surcharges (often
more than a cash fare would have cost you).
It is possible to save
on fuel surcharges by redeeming for Lufthansa First with other airlines, like United, but you'll end up spending a ton
more miles!
In addition, it is eliminating the 15 % online booking discount it has offered
on award bookings and upgrades made through its website or app, and it is raising the number of miles required for Saver Awards, although the increase is relatively modest and likely to be
more than offset by the elimination of the
fuel surcharges.

Singapore charges
more moderate
fuel surcharges on its own flights than it usually adds to most of its airline partners.
One of the worst extra charges you can run into
on an award ticket is a
fuel surcharge, because they can be a few hundred dollars ore
more, depending
on the distance traveled.
The good news is that despite the
fuel surcharges, you are paying many fewer Miles &
More miles to fly
on Lufthansa vs. booking with United's MileagePlus program.
For instance, foreign airlines routinely add «
fuel surcharges»
on award redemptions that
more than cover the additional cost of higher
fuel prices.
While redeeming miles
on British Airways flights carries mighty
fuel surcharges, there is a lot
more opportunity for finding award space.

If you are planning a trip the USA using Miles &
More Miles you can fly
on Polish LOT and pay much lower
fuel surcharges than
on Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines.
As of 23 March this award will cost 20,000 miles
more than before but passengers will save $ 230
on the
fuel surcharges they no longer have to pay.
A US domestic round - trip in Business class
on United: MileagePlus would leave you 5,400 miles short, while Miles and
More only requires 35,000 miles, with no
fuel surcharge on United.
Awards
on Singapore Airlines and / or SilkAir will now cost
more in miles, but less in cash due to the removal of
fuel surcharges.
Depending
on the stopovers, you'll usually run 100,000 Avios or
more to head to Asia, and then you'll pay hundreds of dollars in
fuel surcharges on top of that.
You don't get good availability
on Lufthansa flights when you book through other Star Alliance partners, such as United and Air Canada, and if you book them through Miles &
More, you're facing hefty
fuel surcharges.
British Airways collects nasty
fuel surcharges on a lot of awards, but as you can see exemplified above, there are many options with no
fuel surcharges (and even
more with low ones — mainly short, direct economy flights).
You could also consider using it to fly to London because though it would cost you
more Avios to add in an extra segment, you'd still be saving a lot of money
on those British taxes and
fuel surcharges, so if you have a lot of Avios but want to save cash, that could be a workaround option for you.
Now here's the trade - off, United charges
more miles than Singapore for most routes, so if you want to fly
on a United partner airline you'll have to decide whether you want to use
more miles to redeem a United ticket without
fuel surcharges or whether you want to save miles and use Singapore but pay
fuel surcharges.

Just MHO of course, but Alaska miles are pretty valuable give one - way awards with a stopover, and partners that are in
more than one alliance (and not in any alliance) plus no
fuel surcharges except
on BA.

But Flying Blue miles are good for getting you to Europe
on Delta flights with no
fuel surcharges, which is a big plus, since the previous options to book Delta flights with Ultimate Rewards were
more restrictive.
A simple search of New York to Tokyo
on ANA will generate
fuel surcharge as well (although
more reasonable).
Avios have actually gotten
more valuable since USAirways joined OneWorld as you can use them
on all American and USAirways flights within the Western Hemisphere without any
fuel surcharges.
It differs greatly from what you were used to with Star (starting with the insane
fuel surcharges on British Airways, which makes getting to Europe much
more difficult, and Africa basically impossible without
surcharges).
Somehow I'll get
more Copa miles in the future and redeem them
on a solid award chart, with no
fuel surcharges, to take advantage of great Star Alliance award space worldwide.

Flying Blue also allows a stopover and open jaw routing
on roundtrip awards, so even if you have to pay
fuel surcharges, you may be able to get well
more than the standard 1 cent per point or less that Citi gives for ThankYou point redemptions.

And while there may be some
fuel surcharges on international awards booked with Miles &

more flights than the website shows and often it will force you to route through London to fly
on BA, resulting in
