While lunch was being unpacked, we hiked across the tall sand dunes for views of the ocean where the waves pounded the
beach with
Morro Rock towering in the distance.
The most popular
beach is on the north side of
Morro Rock, north of the harbor.
Head north up the coast from Avila
Beach, and you'll reach the upper half of coastal SLO County, comprising the towns of
Morro Bay (famous for
Morro Rock and a wealth of great seafood restaurants), Cayucos (if you have a sweet - tooth, do not go through this town without stopping at Brown Butter Cookie Company), and Cambria.
My favorite ones are: Hiking around the nearby mountains (the hike to Dois Irmãos is pretty easy and it offers amazing views); Taking the train to Christ the Redeemer; Paragliding over the city;
Rock climbing to
Morro da Urca; Cycling around Botafogo Bay; Taking the cable car to Sugar Loaf; Visiting a glamorous
beach like Ipanema or Copacabana; Having a walk around downtown; and Partying in Lapa.
Not far from Hazard Canyon's
beach is the lovely North Point
beach which is situated within walking distance between the iconic
Morro Rock to the south and Cayucos Pier to the north.
