The
most challenging part
of learning before
Maths Pathway was I felt some
areas of my lesson were rushed.

This work will require different types
of union contracts and compensation that pay more to teachers in shortage
areas like
math and science and disproportionally increase salaries for the early career teachers and principals in high need schools who are
most likely to leave the profession.
As several classes have started taking the PARCC exams in English and
math this week, I have been reflecting on an
area of our program that many
of our students find
most challenging — writing.
It is true for many subjects but
most documented in mathematics as acquisition
of early
math knowledge and skills is the
most important predictor not only for later
math achievement but also for achievement in other content
areas (Amy Claessens, The University
of Chicago and Mimi Engel, Vanderbilt University, 2013).
But the
most extensive survey
of student performance at charter schools, from Stanford University's Center for Research on Education Outcomes, found that,
of the 2,403 charter schools tracked from 2006 to 2008, only 17 percent had better
math test results than the public schools in their
area, while 37 percent had results that were «significantly below» those
of the public schools and 46 percent had results that were «statistically indistinguishable» from their public - school counterparts.
The new report shows proficiency rates for blacks in reading and
math improving in
most areas cited in the report, but still far below the rates
of white students.
«We focused on [getting] the reading and
math scores up because
most of them were lacking in those
areas,» said Patrick Schrader, the assistant principal
of Roberts / Early College High School.
Another student attended a school whose regular program included
math instruction that was a year, often two years in advance
of most schools in the
area.
Most surveyed districts report they can not find qualified
math, science, and special education teachers, and more than one - third are experiencing shortages
of elementary teachers — usually an
area of surpluses.
The one
area where that was less true was middle and high school
math — the one remaining place where we're
most likely to see a continuation
of tracking.
Parts
of most every state in America face troubling teacher shortages: the
most frequent shortage
areas are
math, science, bilingual education and special education.
