One
of the
most common situations humane officers face is when a
pet has been
abandoned.
About 15 million
of the national human population
of 23 million people live in the intensely urbanized Taipei area, at the extreme north
of the island nation, where
most of the dogs and cats are
pets, or are descended from lost or
abandoned pets, in an environment affording some suitable habitat for feral cats, but little or none for street dogs.
Some are lost, some are
abandoned, some are unwanted;
most are the result
of irresponsible
pet ownership.

most common illnesses found in
abandoned, neglected
pets.
The assessment showed that the neighborhoods from which we receive the highest number
of lost, unwanted and
abandoned pets are also the neighborhoods struggling the
most with economic and social issues.
Though
most shelter reports don't differentiate between strays and lost
pets, Emily Weiss, vice president
of shelter research and development for ASPCA in New York, said
most strays had a home at one time and were either lost or
abandoned.
In fact,
most of her own
pets were formerly
abandoned.
