Motion Picture Arts and Sciences» 90 - year history to win a directing Oscar, while «Lady Bird» director Greta Gerwig could be only the second female to take home that
prize.
On the television side, which spanned 10 awards, «Justified» was a surprise winner for Best TV Drama Series, while the deliciously ribald «It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia,» now entering its seventh season, was named Best TV Comedy Series, knocking off last year's winner, «The Big C.» Kate Winslet («Mildred Pierce») and Jason Isaacs (PBS» «Case Histories») were awarded Best Actress and Best Actor
prizes in the Miniseries or
Motion Picture Made for Television categories, while Vanessa Williams («Desperate Housewives») and Ryan Hurst («Sons of Anarchy») won supporting performance trophies, which span both TV movie and serial work.
It will be interesting to see if the Oscars will follow suit and honor The Shape of Water, considering that the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has only honored a fantasy film with its top
prize once before, with The Lord of the Ring: The Return of the King's Best
Picture win in 2004.
Fences and The Crown picked up two acting honours, while the stars of Hidden Figures claimed the
prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a
Motion Picture.
Oldman can currently be seen alongside Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James in «The Darkest Hour» as World War II British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and at the weekend he won the Best Performance by an Actor in a
Motion Picture, Drama
prize at the Golden Globes and he has also been nominated for the Leading Actor gong at this year's BAFTA Film Awards.
The darkly comedic - and controversial — drama won for best cast in a
motion picture, while Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell picked up individual acting
prizes.
Kidman's win set the stage for a night that ended up largely celebrating stories about women, including Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (which walked away with four
