It is because I object to the new - fangled idea that an early election would
result from a
motion, perhaps proposed by the Opposition, any MP or even the Government themselves, that requires — this is contrary to all constitutional precedent and history since our Parliament first sat representing the electors of this country — the support of two - thirds or more of those eligible to
vote as Members of Parliament.
State Sen. Frank Padavan (R - Bellerose) filed a
motion in Queens Civil Courthouse Wednesday to impound
voting machines and ballots in his district after his Democratic challenger Tony Avella ended his 38 - year reign in Albany by a margin of about 3,000
votes, according to city Board of Elections
results.
Padavan filed a court
motion last week to impound all ballots and
voting machines in the 11th SD, citing problems with the new equipment, even though the unofficial
results showed him badly trailing Avella, 25,864
votes to 22,781
votes.
The
motion was approved with 70
votes in favour, 10 against and two abstentions, a
result that immediately saw Spanish shares fall sharply.
Government whips thought they would lose if the
motions were put to a
vote and so Tory MPs abstained, with the
result that the
motions were passed and the documents were handed over to select committees.
That decision raised the possibility of a massive rebellion by Tory backbenchers, which would have
resulted in defeat for the government had Commons business managers pressed the
motion to a
vote.
Shortly after McGhee spoke, the board
voted and approved the
motion, which specified that the academic component will measure both raw test scores and student growth in reading, math and science, once the state has
results from its upcoming new science test.
