The Lego Movie has been snubbed by the Oscars and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar and Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler have both been left in cold in some way for award contention.

Nightcrawler certainly borrows much of its themes and tone from previous movies such as Network, Taxi Driver, Peeping Tom, Drive, but Gilroy recycles those ideas and places them in a contemporary setting and allows us to examine one of society's more questionable career paths, while also taking a glimpse at our human nature in relation to crime and violence.

The only American movie that impressed me was almost neglected by the Academy — Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler — a merciless look at the depth of American media with an electrifying performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.

He went on a heck of a hot streak recently with Prisoners, End of Watch, Enemy, and Nightcrawler, and though his movies have been a bit more hit or miss since then, he still regularly delivers stirring, compelling performances that are always worth discussing.

If the most effective horror movies are those that quantify a monster in terms of its deformity and destructiveness, then Nightcrawler is the most chilling film to hit cinemas this Halloween.

However, this featurette won't give much new information to those who only know Nightcrawler from the movie.

Which is inexcusable when you've got Alan Cumming as the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler all over your movie.

Nightcrawler (Oct. 31 Wide): Reviews have been quick to note that this movie might end up being too weird and dark for AMPAS, but the film was still one of the bigger critical breakouts of TIFF this year, and it'll likely be one of the more acclaimed wide releases opening this month.

Nightcrawler is the directing debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy, co-written with his brother, Tony Gilroy, who also directed), and whatever I may think about the movie (and I am not as big a fan as the rest of the world), it does not feel like a first movie.
