EVENT With the theme «Beloved Country,» paying tribute to the visual and performing arts in South Africa, Performa's 2016 annual gala includes a new performance by South African artist Athi - Patra Ruga and honors curator, museum director and writer Okwui Enwezor.

At 2:30 p.m., Carolee Schneemann joins the exhibition's curators Sabine Breitwieser and Branden W. Joseph, together with Stuart Comer, Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at The Museum of Modern Art, in a conversation surrounding her work, featuring an introduction by Peter Eleey, Chief Curator, MoMA PS1.

Curated by artist Michelle Grabner, Anthony Elms, associate curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and Stuart Comer, curator of media and performance art at the Museum of Modern Art, this is the first time in the Biennial's history that each curator has been given their own floor.

Stuart Comer, the museum's chief curator of media and performance art, described the piece as «a watershed transition in her work, about activating a social and political space for the viewer.»

Adrienne Edwards was recently appointed Engell Speyer Family Curator and Curator of Performance at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), a position she begins in May.

Live is curated by Adrienne Edwards, who joins the Whitney Museum of American Art in May as performance curator.

Stulen, who is currently curator of audience experience and performance at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, succeeds Rand Suffolk, who accepted a position at Atlanta's High Museum of Art last year.

Rudolph, now SAMA's chief curator and American art curator, worked at the Dallas Museum of Art eight years ago when it acquired one of Sully's most remarkable fancy pictures, Cinderella at the Kitchen Fire (1843), and Rudolph and Soltis's desire to understand how it fit into his career planted the seeds for Painted Performance.

Curators William Keyse Rudolph and Carol Eaton Soltis, the organizers of Thomas Sully: Painted Performance at the San Antonio Museum of Art, argue that Sully — who grew up in the theater and launched his career painting actors and actresses, often in character — was instinctively in sync, even presciently so, with the 21st - century truism that all portraiture is performative.

Stuart Comer is chief curator of media and performance at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
