Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center, said this year's ice retreat was caused by previous
warm years reducing the amount of perennial ice — which is more resistant to melting.
Some
scientists, including Dr Gavin Schmidt, head of
Nasa's climate division, have claimed that the recent highs were mainly the result of long - term global
warming.
