Some missteps by
early implementers of progressive education have left it with a bad name in certain communities.
As we wrote recently,
the early implementers have gotten promising results, including high growth in both reading and math by the second year in schools that used Opportunity Culture models schoolwide.
Our objective is to widen the reach and appeal of the methods to scholars who do not possess the same deep technical backgrounds as the developers and
early implementers of the methods.
As
early implementers, these educators have gone both to the «source» of the standards and used other proxies for quality and alignment: They've worked directly with and learned from the standards» authors themselves and / or used tools created by them (e.g., the Publishers» Criteria developed by Student Achievement Partners and several other groups).

In Common Core in the Districts: An Early Look at
Early Implementers (2014), Education First researchers Katie Cristol and Brinton S. Ramsey, in collaboration with the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, profile four «early implementer» school districts to examine factors that are key to successful implementations of standards - based reform: communications, leadership, curricular materials, professional development, and assessment and accountability.
Early implementer districts were required to adopt the fully integrated model as a condition of being in the pilot program.
Organizers of
the early implementer initiative are paying particular attention to their pilot districts» middle schools, where the new science standards are most controversial.
The hope is that lessons gleaned in these «
early implementer» districts could be shared with other districts before students start taking new statewide science assessments slated for the spring of 2019.
Oakland Unified in particular has been assertive in rolling out the standards in its classrooms, even prior to participating in
the early implementer initiative.
Initiative organizers hope the size and geographic diversity of
the early implementer districts can build statewide momentum around the new standards, which for many districts has taken a backseat in the rush to implement the Common Core.
Over the last two months teacher leaders attended three
early implementer institutes in Southern California, the Bay Area and the Central Valley.
Launched as a partnership among the K — 12 Alliance at WestEd, Achieve, the California Department of Education, and the California State Board of Education, NGSS
Early Implementers is a large - scale demonstration initiative running through 2018.
