NPD Bookscan numbers are in, and VIZ's Shonen Jump is king — at least at bookstores around the country.
Port Washington, NY, October 6, 2017 — According to
NPD Bookscan data from global information provider the NPD Group, the comics and graphic novels category in the U.S. trade book market has experienced compound annual unit sales growth of 15 percent over the last three years, making it one of the highest growth categories in the trade book marketplace.
NPD Bookscan announced that for the first three weeks of December books saw a 4 % to 7 % decline and only the last week of the year saw a small gain of 4 %, presumably people were buying last minute gifts.
Sales of print books continue to climb, with unit sales up 1.9 % in 2017 over 2016, according to
NPD Bookscan (which captures an estimated 80 - 85 % of total print sales): 687.2 million books were sold in every format, up from 674.1 million in 2016.

Bestseller lists are focused on fiction and non-fiction new releases, and high - profile bestseller lists such as the Globe & Mail and the New York Times compile their lists with weekly sales data from BookNet Canada and
NPD BookScan (formerly Nielsen
Bookscan) but then further curate them.
Sales are hurting for several of the eliminated categories as of April 2017, with graphic novels 5 percent down in sales relative to this period last year, romance sales down 10 percent, and mass market sales down 6 percent, according to the
NPD Group (formerly Nielsen
Bookscan).
The two ordering services had been sold to the consumer marketing research company
NPD when it bought Nielsen
Bookscan in January.
