The fellowship program, supported by a competitive National Science Foundation GK - 12 grant, provides students with partial tuition, a stipend, and an opportunity for community outreach and training in education as they continue their graduate education.

My current position as co-PI and deputy director of Bio-Link, the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technology Resource and Education Center for Biotechnology (see box below), gives me the opportunity to help train community college students in general — and underrepresented minorities in particular — interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

What's more, a 2005 federal transportation bill allocated an additional 612 million for a new national Safe Routes to School program, requiring all states to hire a coordinator to administer funds to communities for new bike lanes, pathways, sidewalks, and education and promotion campaigns in elementary and middle schools.

The study grew out of work the authors undertook in the Pacific, where scientists met with community members and local, regional, and national government experts to examine issues such as food security, access to fresh water, quality education, sustainable tourism, and protection of marine and terrestrial resources.

One key message that emerged from the exercise: The scientific community is fed up with the complexity of the national education and research system.

Last month the university released the 1999 - 2000 National Survey of Graduate Assistant Stipends, Graduate Fellowships, and Postdoctoral Fellowships to great fanfare in the graduate education community.

Health care experts, such as the National Academies» Institute of Medicine, have called on nurses nationwide to continue their education through lifelong learning to elevate patient care and community health.
