Off on Climate Models: Epic Failure or Spot on Consistent with Observed Warming?

Fifteen months ago, academic
climate scientists expressed worries that a new
climate model sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was going to harm existing
modeling efforts, siphoning
off talent and funding when federally funded science is short
on both.
Titanic international projects that are just kicking
off, including the National Science Foundation - funded Ocean Observatories Initiative and Southern Ocean Carbon and
Climate Observations and
Modeling project, promise to pile
on reams of new data and knowledge in the coming years — not all of it expected to be postcard pretty.

I also agree that
model predictions of 0.2 C surface warming per decade were clearly inaccurate, but
on the larger question of
climate trends, they were probably not very far
off.
Incidentally, I know it has been repeated
on a number of occasions, but I think it might help to remind people that
climate models are not based
off of surface temperature records.
In short, whatever the initial
climate sensitivity is to a doubling of CO2, I just can't buy
off on this positive feedback loop idea that says that temperatures are going to spin out of control once we pass over some «tipping point» that only seems to exists in some scientist's theoretical
model.
One that includes the

Then, in 2009, the exposure of emails between the «scientists» responsible for the data the UN Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC) was putting out to scare the pants
off of everyone about «global warming» — since dubbed Climategate — revealed they were not only rigging the computer
models, but were increasingly worried that the planet had entered a new, perfectly natural, cooling cycle.
Faster plant growth due to higher concentrations of carbon dioxide may offset increased emissions from forest die -

on climate modeling.

Model Offers Fresh Approach for Valuing Nature
My reason for asking is that my conclusion, namely the parameters resulting from fitting the
model to multidecadal
climate, seems not to depend significantly
on whether one cuts
off at 2010, 2000, 1990, 1970, or even 1950.
They are used to hand
off information from one area of research to another (e.g., from research
on energy systems and greenhouse gas emissions to
climate modeling).
Because of the invidious domination by the politically - driven, I suspect
climate science would have been better
off without such
models, allowing the participants to concentrate
on observation, theorising, and testing in the real world.

Models Underestimate Role Of CO2 In Warming
Even the claim that the sulfur straw would be «harmless» because it could be turned
off requires verification — and the only way to verify this claim before turning the straw
on is with
climate models.

Model To Assess
ClimateClimate Change
Quotes from my hero, Nikola Tesla (10/07/1856 — 07/01/1943)
On climate models: «Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander
off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality.»
Hence we have to resort to simulations of such a
climate using state - of - the - art
climate models.Furthermore, small differences in how we initialize these simulations can have a significant impact
on the end results — reflecting the fact that we do not have completely perfect
models and that in the real world small differences in what is going
on now can have significant effects
on what happens in the future (to quote a famous statement, «The flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil can set
off a tornado in Texas»), the so called «butterfly effect».
Much of the recent discussion of
climate sensitivity in online forums and in peer - reviewed literature focuses
on two areas: cutting
off the so - called «long tail» of low probability \ high
climate sensitivities (e.g., above 6 C or so), and reconciling the recent slowdown in observed surface warming with predictions from global
climate models.
Do not go
off on some tangent about V&V for
climate models that has no bearing
on dynamical core testing.
Please keep unrelated questions
on other issues (such as forced atmospheric
models or full
climate models)
off of this thread so that this manuscript can be used to illuminate the serious and unresolvable problems with numerical approximations of the unforced dynamical systems.
