Steep
price rises for
oil and gas could stymie
global demand or prolong the current coal boom or it could all run out sooner than expected.
Analysis in the new WEO - 2017 showed that for the first time the largest share of
global subsidies that benefit fossil fuel consumption went to keep electricity
prices artificially low (41 % of the
global total), ahead of
oil (40 %)
and natural
gas.
Current proposals by
global warming advocates will likely cost billions of dollars
and require a wholesale transformation of the nation's economy
and society. Americans could be paying 30 percent more for natural
gas in their homes
and even more for electricity.  The cost of coal could quadruple
and crude
oil prices could rise by an additional -LSB-...]
The
oil and gas companies know this, which is why they're speaking out in support of a
global price on carbon.
A group of 70
global investors managing more than $ 3 trillion of collective assets have launched the first - ever coordinated effort to spur the world's 45 top
oil and gas, coal
and electric power companies to assess the financial risks that changes in demand
and price pose to their business plans.
Paul Spedding, former
global co-head of
oil and gas research at HSBC, an adviser to Carbon Tracker, says he believes the
price of
oil may never recover.
This is disappointing news: here at Treehugger, we've repeatedly driven the point home that the president has almost no control over the
price of
gas in the short - term — a cocktail of
global demand,
oil speculation,
and political instability in volatile regions determines the
price of
gas more than anything else.
It implies that increased
prices for
gas and oil, which increase profits, would also increase
global warming.

Investors are obliged to weigh any number of unknowns: will Venezuela increase production
and keep heavy
oil differentials high; will the
price of natural
gas rapidly rise; will climate change suddenly force governments to introduce carbon taxes; can the companies control their labour
and construction costs; will
global demand continue to rise?
