OneDrive placeholders are returning, but under the name of Files On - Demand.
There's actually a whole lot that's new, although it's not the one feature that I've been waiting for, which is the alternative to

It's a feature that's similar in concept to the now - defunct
OneDrive placeholders.
Personally, I was hoping for
OneDrive placeholders to make a return in this build.
It's not
the OneDrive placeholders that you were looking for, or the interactive live tiles, but it's a start.
A couple predictions: HoloLens ships in time for the holidays, Continuum for Xbox,
OneDrive placeholders return, Surface Phone with an x86 processor (and since Continuum will run desktop apps, everyone will make excuses when it doesn't work well because it's new), and more.
In fact, I didn't upgrade to Windows 10 on my PC for a long time because
OneDrive placeholders are so important to my work flow.

You can also set up your
OneDrive as a network drive, which serves the same purpose as
placeholders; however, it's slow and doesn't allow you to use large files.
Concerning
Onedrive, I think they pulled out the
placeholders for two reasons.

placeholders that were found in Windows 8.1 and removed in Windows 10.

placeholders on users» PCs to represent files they stored in

Almost instantly your
OneDrive folder should fill up with

At the Build 2017 event last week, Microsoft announced that
OneDrive's
placeholder files will be making a comeback as Files On - Demand with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update this autumn.
But after that early 2015 discussion, the
placeholders feature appeared to drop off the
OneDrive roadmap until its surprise reappearance today.
The single sync engine will replace the current lineup of three utilities: One for Windows 7 / 8 / Mac for consumer services, another for
OneDrive for Business (based on the old Groove sync capabilities), and the newest one for Windows 8.1, offering support for a new feature, «
placeholder files,» which allow a Windows 8.1 user to browse the contents of
OneDrive in the File Explorer utility, with local and cloud files existing side by side.
In other news, the
OneDrive universal app for Windows 10 might not be too far away, but don't get your hopes up for
placeholder functionality, as there's no sign of it in the beta version.

placeholders on your PC to represent files you have stored in
OneDrive.
Microsoft is bringing back
placeholder files for
OneDrive with the Fall Creators Update.
The
OneDrive team has promised tools that will handle the same scenarios as
placeholders, although we don't know how they will work yet — only that we won't get them until the autumn update.
Placeholders that used to let you see not just all the folders in your
OneDrive, even if you weren't syncing them to your PC, but even the files and image thumbnails in those folders, were removed from Windows 10.
That last one is something of a backtrack to when
OneDrive folders and files were presented as
placeholders that you could download on demand.
If you're a
OneDrive user that misses
placeholders, then this is the point where you're asking, «what about consumers?»
For those offline - only there are no
placeholders in File Explorer and no way to know they even exist except to visit
OneDrive in a web browser.
