Having attended McCourt's reading, I can
only conclude that the critical reception of Angela's Ashes says
more about the expectations of «serious» Irish
writing than about the
book itself.
My
only real complaint with this
book is the complaint I have with all such
books: it seems as if 50 % or
more of the
book is devoted to telling stories about whatever the author is
writing about.
You are blinded by your faith (belief without evidence) and obviously don't care if what you believe is true or not, you
only care that you get to think you're
more intelligent because you have a
book written 2000 years ago, by 40 different men that provides what you believe to be the answers.
I teach them right from wrong by example not scaring them into believing in a
book of stories that was
written back in B.C. Nothing erks me
more then to hear my NJ suburb families tell me how they can't wait to see their little girl get all dressed up in their communion dress,
only to not continue with the religious education.
She started, unfortunately, with a novel (the
only novel I've
written), and later
wrote me a very nice note thanking me for the lunch and saying she had read the
book but would like to have
more «added on» to it.

only just begun to pore over the delights in your
book and it's tricky to say which I'm enjoying
more — the
writing, recipes or gorgeous pix.

Not
only did it lead to a
book that was translated into at least four languages,

written to market, have 10 (or

books out (and they're good, follow tropes, etc) have great blurbs, great covers, a big mailing list, a free reader magnet, and use thousands of dollars in advertisement when the
book releases, yet they still don't come close to making a living (most
only make a few hundred dollars after production costs).
This character was originally meant to
only have a cameo in that
book but absolutely stole every scene I
wrote him in and basically demanded
more coverage.
Previously, tablet PCs were pretty much the
only platform that could handle the intense graphics levels and video embeds that made reading and
writing the
book such an experience, but with EPUB3's launch
more and
more devices will be able to handle the workload.
The
book had some well drawn characters and in the movie in my head I was reminded of great pictures such as PAPER MOON and BONNIE AND CLYDE, it evoked that time / era... the 30's bank robbers who were glamorized as hero's... Anyway the
book is fine and my
only minor quibble is that it ends the way most Leonard
books end, [edited by BookBrowse to remove plot spoiler]... But Elmore Leonards been doing this for
more years then I have been alive and I've read every single page he ever
wrote so as I say, these are minor quibbles.
Since then he's
written getting on fifty
books, almost all of them on a little old portable typewriter — one draft, to see what he's got, and what else he needs to know and so on; then a bit of research; then a complete rewrite, beginning to end; and then, if all's well,
only a bit
more tinkering.
Not
only does this mean you don't have to wait to see your
book in print, but it also opens up even
more doors for
writing adaptive, timely, and responsive works that touch upon issues still being actively discussed in the public sphere.
I say this not to be negative or downplay what you're saying, as I've seen it work for lots of writers, but
only to broaden the point that not everyone is capable of that upfront investment, and as hopelessly impatient I can be at times, this is an issue than «just
writing more books» will not solve regarding indie publishing in the big picture sense.
