Researchers say the spacecraft fleet currently orbiting the Red Planet are aging and there are no replacements
in the works, imperiling future Mars landers, rovers and even possible human
missions that will depend on
orbiters to talk to Earth.
Over the course of 134
missions, the
orbiters have logged more than 1320 days
in space.
Later
in 2016 NASA picked five U.S. aerospace firms to carry out concept studies for a prospective Mars
orbiter mission.
Mission teams for the relevant
orbiters are notified
in advance when projections indicate a collision is possible, even if the possibility will likely disappear
in subsequent projections.
Gathering that data is the
mission of the Mars Reconnaissance
Orbiter, or MRO, a 4,800 - pound probe now
in elliptical orbit around the Red Planet.
Originally an ESA - only lander
mission, it was merged with NASA plans
in 2009 and ended up as a two - craft
