Three pods of about 80 resident
Orca whales live around the southern tip of Vancouver Island and in the Gulf islands.
Some biologists are now speculating if
orca whales living in our San Juan Islands kayaking routes must do the same.

whales are also found in the North Atlantic, and a graduate student at the University of Rhode Island is the first to investigate the ecology of the
orcas that
live around Newfoundland and Labrador.
They also extracted DNA from the specimens, and from skin samples of
living orcas to reconstruct the

Now, scientists report online today in PeerJ that commercial ships entering Haro Strait where the
orcas live (as shown in the photo above), are likely interfering with the calls the
whales make to communicate and locate prey.

life found between its rocky shores.
