Health and community professionals can play an important role
in working with
families, early childhood services and schools to support
families to
feel connected to their
child's education setting as well as connecting with each
other.
Although it appears that the intergenerational stake exists within the parent —
child tie with regard to how parents and
children feel about one another, it is not clear whether the stake also exists between ties (G1 — G2 vs G2 — G3)
in the same
family or whether the stake is more prominent
in some
family ties than
in others.

other parents who share similar concerns about their
children.
Some
children feel excited about living
in a blended
family;
others feel negative.
It helps if
other people who look after your
child — for example,
child care workers, teachers and
family members — also know what makes your
child feel anxious and what they can do to help him with managing anxiety
in these situations.
Some
children might
feel excited about living
in a blended
family, but
others might
feel worried or even resentful and angry.
In these cases,
families can support
children to process their
feelings of grief and loss and look for opportunities to connect with and foster
other friendships.
If grandparents share this role with the
child's main caregivers,
other grandparents, members of the
family or caregivers outside the
family, it is helpful to discuss how all the different
family relationships may work so that the
child knows what to expect when they are with their various caregivers and continue to
feel safe and secure
in all their relationships.
We've met lots of
other families and my daughter who's now seven she still has play dates with
other little girls that she doesn't go to primary school with now but who she made a really, really strong bond with at this centre and that is beautiful to see that you know, I am now friends with those
children's parents and there's a sense of belonging, you see each
other in the community and you know you belong to the same place and it's a nice
feeling.
If your
child feels more comfortable
in a
family counseling environment, we can arrange for you, your spouse, and
other parties to join
in a therapy session.
If we begin to think help is needed — for the marital relationship, perhaps strained by the addition of a difficult
child, for the health of
other siblings
in the
family who may need extra support and coping skills, for the severely acting - out or depressed
child — we are probably right and we must act quickly to find professional help, not giving up until some relief is
felt.
A recent and compelling study entitled Neurons to Neighborhoods, conducted by the Board on
Children, Youth, and Families of the Institute of Medicine, calls attention to the importance of early emotional development in young children.1 Based on a careful review of neuroscience and developmental research, it highlights compelling evidence that a child's earliest experiences and relationships set the stage for how a child manages feelings and impulses, and relates to

In other families,
children are taught, to take their cues as to what thoughts and
feelings others think they should have.
I
feel that by helping the parents and
children understand the myriad of emotions they are experiencing and helping them to express them
in healthy ways allows the
family to accept each
other more easily.
