Microsoft while smart to support its own platforms... is quite correct in being why leave out its core platform
outside of console gaming out in the cold... no problem but the main problem Microsoft is facing is just like any «PC» for the living room has faced since its been tried to make the «Living Room PC» the main compute entertainment platform for the living room is that like it has always been for the pas 30 + years, majority
of consumer's do not want a PC in their Living room!
To sum up the above, Nintendo have the opportunity to generate billion dollar businesses
outside of their traditional
console gaming business in Smart devices, amiibo's download content and licensing.
Sony can't do anything about the upfront cost
of a PlayStation 4,
outside of sell the
console for a loss, and so they need to get their software portfolio right in order to attract gamers, this is how PC
gaming became so successful.
Articles about E3 this year kept focusing on the new
consoles, throwing around the term teraflop as if anyone
outside of Tom's Hardware really can quantify what it will bring to the
gaming experience.
Yes, I wish topic selection was more robust, genre selection was more varied, and that you could actually see other game companies being formed around you and their successes (you get almost no perspective on what's going on in the rest
of the
gaming world
outside of console development), but these limits are understandable given its an indie studio that's never done anything like this before.
The videogames argument is true if you take a look at the numbers
outside of console gaming.
Consoles are far from irrelevant but it's clear to see that it's no longer the biggest segment in the
gaming industry and when Nintendo aren't even the biggest presence in that segment it's clear that this is why they are now taking drastic steps to change their business model to expand
outside of traditional
console gaming.
While those
consoles were all about being media powerhouses with very large online infrastructures (Xbox Live and PlayStation Network), the Wii offered very little
outside of gaming.
