award Zone D (5,000 to 7,500 miles) and costs 120,000 miles per roundtrip.
The Cathay

I've got an extra incentive to check out the new Premium Economy cabin when I'm on board as I suspect Cathay

Business Class fares across the
Pacific are usually considerably higher than those across the Atlantic so a saver
award to Japan or Hong Kong could be good value here.
This means that there can be some great value to be had if you select the right redemption options — like Cathay
Pacific in
Business or First
Class between Europe and Asia (not a hard
award to find), LAN
Business Class from the US to South American and Korean Air
Business Class between the US and Asia.
American Airlines AAdvantage miles are very hard to use economically thanks to the dearth of premium cabin SAAver
awards, United Miles are ok but 100,000 won't get you a roundtrip
Business Class award to any major long - haul destination (if you're heading east or west) while 100,000 Alaska Miles will get you some nice roundtrip redemptions on Cathay
Pacific and even American (subject to
award availability).
There is some amazing value to be had out of those options — especially Cathay
Pacific in First
Class between Europe and Asia (not a hard
award to find) and Korean Air
Business Class from $ 2,216.
Effective April 28, British Airways has devalued their
award chart for premium cabin
awards (Premium Economy,
Business and First
class awards) Only positive change in this devaluation is the introduction of off - peak

Pacific is a partner of both carriers, yet you can fly first
class on Cathay
Pacific using just 70,000 Alaska miles each way — about the same price as a
business class award using American miles.

class and spacious first -
class suites provide some of the best
award redemption opportunities for those crossing the
Pacific Ocean.
There are significant increases to
Business and First
Class Awards to Asia, Europe, South America's Region 2, and the South
Pacific
Reading between the lines, I have to assume that the
award chart is going to get worse for
awards like Cathay
Pacific business class from North America to Asia for 100K miles or the South America LAN reward I mentioned above.
While I'd rather pay an extra 12,500 miles for first
class over
business class, the reality is that Cathay
Pacific is quite stingy with first
class award space in advance nowadays.
This doesn't help for advance planning but the approach is to plan your trip with
business class awards and be prepared to pay a change fee if you'd like to travel in first and a given Cathay
Pacific flight opens in first
class.
Alaska MileagePlan does offer cheaper
award redemptions to Japan when you opt to fly American, Hainan, or Cathay
Pacific business class.
Meanwhile Cathay
Pacific is really generous with
business class award space in advance, often releasing up to five seats per flight when the schedule opens.
For those planning a trip in the next year or so, AAdvantage miles are currently great for Cathay
Pacific First
Class, Cathay
Pacific Business Class, Qantas First
Class, Etihad First
Class, and other international
awards, at least if you don't transit a third region that would break your
award into two separate
awards.
Cathay
Pacific is quite generous with releasing
business class award space in advance, making it a great use of American miles.
I used it to find
business -
class award space on Iberia ahead of the recent AAdvantage devaluation, and I know many others who use it for
awards like Cathay
Pacific first
class or JAL
business class.
In the meantime, it makes it a no - brainer to redeem for Cathay
