Following Roland Barthes's notion of «written clothing» (as articulated in The Fashion System, 1967), the group show Costume: Written Clothing attempts to reflect on some of these themes by
drawing together a fairly disparate range of artists who have, according to
curator Claire Jackson, conceived of costume as «a device or prism through which to investigate relationships between
performance, image and Sculpture.»

The keen retrospective eye of the
curators has thrown up a rewarding mix of the mainstream and the obscure, and it is worth the ticket price solely for the video of German opera singer Klaus Nomi performing Lightning Strikes in an over shoulder - padded, shiny tuxedo.Highlights include the subversive designs of the Italian collectives Studio Alchymia and Memphis; graphics by Peter Saville and Neville Brody; the original presentation
drawing for Philip Johnson's AT&T building (1978); paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol; Jeff Koons» stainless steel bust of Louis XIV (1986);
performance costumes, including David Byrne's big suit from the documentary Stop Making Sense (1984); excerpts from films such as Derek Jarman's The Last of England (1987); and music videos featuring Laurie Anderson, Grace Jones and New Order.Catalogue offerSave # 8 on the exhibition catalogue with your National Art Pass.

Within this anodyne context, the show's organizers — Stuart Comer, chief
curator of media and
performance art at the Museum of Modern Art; Anthony Elms, an artist and associate
curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; and Michelle Grabner, also an artist and professor of painting and
drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago — have made some interesting choices, pulled in some new faces and shaped three quite different shows.
Curator Sabine Breitwieser of the Generali Foundation includes early Conceptualist photographs and
drawings, documentation of»70s feminist
performances, and recent video installations, in which Piper explores issues of race and African - American experience.
The 2014 Whitney Biennial on March 7 — May 25, 2014, will take a bold new form as three

Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor in the Painting and
Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago)-- each oversee one floor, representing a range of geographic vantages and curatorial methodologies.

Perhaps reflecting the wide range of approaches artists engage today, the Whitney rejected a team approach and selected three separate
curators: Anthony Elms, Associate
Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Stuart Comer, Chief
Curator of Media and
Performance Art at MoMA; and Michelle Grabner, artist and Professor in the Painting and
Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; to organize their own independent sections of the show.

curators to organize the show: Stuart Comer, chief
