The biggest reinvention arrives when the eternal struggle between Farmer McGregor (Sam Neill) and
Peter Rabbit (voiced
by James Corden, and tremendously well - animated), the de facto leader of the family of bunnies raiding the man's vegetable patch, comes to a seemingly abrupt end when McGregor keels over dead — the result of a lifetime of bad habits and, presumably, unchecked and ceaseless rage toward the surrounding fauna.
It's all nevertheless quite pleasant and never dull, certainly, with the movie's mild success cemented
by an effective (and somewhat affecting) closing stretch - which ensures that
Peter Rabbit ultimately comes off as an amiable (if rather forgettable) bit of family - friendly entertainment.
That spirit of giddy flippancy keeps the film pleasantly engaging, but it also practically ensures that, unlike the books on which it's based,
Peter Rabbit is rather unlikely to be recalled with misty - eyed adoration
by the time the year's out, much less over a century after its creation.
