Although hyraxes superficially resemble large rodents or rabbits, both morphological and molecular
phylogenetic studies indicate that they are actually most closely related to elephants and sea cows.
The absence of a single gene tree identical to the avian species tree is consistent with
studies in yeast (82),
indicating that
phylogenetic studies based on one or several genes, especially for rapid radiations, will probably be insufficient.
