In the seven years since that threequel set box office records and earned a Best
Picture nomination, the studio has had some generally liked
if not quite loved triumphs (Finding Dory, Brave, Monsters University), one film that most would agree is at least in contention of «masterpiece» status (Inside Out), and some perplexing, unprecedented misses (Cars 2 & 3 plus the aforementioned Good Dinosaur).
The studio does not appear to have any releases on tap that will match The Big Short's best
picture nomination (with the possible —
if unlikely — exception of Richard Linklater's upcoming spring release Everybody Wants Some), while its box office fortunes ride in large part on the success of upcoming Star Trek and TMNT sequels.

if people see Abigail Breslin's name and immediately

If it were up to me, Beauty and the Beast would also get a Best

I'll start my review for Wonderstruck like this:

Picture and Director will be mentioned much of the year as well, in terms of potential
nominations.

The venerable studio probably had too many wannabe players on their dance card last year with «Interstellar,» «The Gambler» and «Top Five,» but found success when «Selma» landed a Best

If you subscribe to the idea that most movies yielding best - actress
nominations just aren't quite good enough to be nominated for best
picture, your best supporting evidence is to look at the films made by top directors — and then emphatically throw shade at how few of them star women in the first place.
OTHER CATEGORIES There's far more to choose from
if you expand the survey to films that will compete for
nominations outside the Best
Picture and acting races.
However, all of the NYFCC's Best
Pictures since 2007 have at least received a
nomination for Best
Picture at the Oscars and the LAFCA's selections have received nods for the past 10 years, so,
if history is any indication, the odds are strong that «Boyhood» will be on the list when Best
Picture Oscar nominees are announced.
Logan was released in March, which means
if it nabs a Best
Picture nomination, it will be in an elite club of rare titles that have managed a
nomination after opening so early in the year.
Production Design: The beautiful world of Wakanda should secure a
nomination here easily, even
if the movie's overlooked for Best
Picture.
Like Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Part 2 is a shoo - in to earn a Best
Picture nomination,
if only in recognition of the franchise's record - breaking success and tireless pursuit of excellence.
Plus, the narrative for one film or another could shift based on the Oscar
nominations —
if Jordan Peele or Greta Gerwig are snubbed in Best Director, might that galvanize support behind their film in the Best
Picture race («The Argo Effect»)?
Some pundits have wondered
if the Warner Bros. tentpole could be the first comic book movie to score a best
picture nomination at the Oscars.
The Shape of Water did okay in terms of Sally Hawkins and also netted a
nomination for the great Richard Jenkins, but still missed out on the all - important ensemble
nomination, which,
if you read this site, you would know that is a potential problem in terms of winning Best
Picture.
If its lack of a Best
Picture nomination wasn't enough, Thompson's absence here very much shows that the Academy was not high on Banks.
Likewise,
if you miss those two recent years (or those eight distant years) of a big fixed field of ten, it seems reasonable to determine what film just missed out on a Best
Picture nod based on the other major
nominations it received.
It has an outside shot for Best
Picture — easier
if there were a solid ten, harder with only five
nomination slots for voters to fill in.
And,
if I was really into long - shot betting, I might go ahead and predict Beasts of No Nation to make it in based on celebrity endorsements and passion votes, flying in from out of nowhere to land a Best
Picture nomination.

I can't imagine the Academy going for Black Swan in such a big way as the BFCA did, but on the other hand it could surely rack up quite a few
nominations if they really love it:
Picture, Director, Actress, Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design and so on.
If I had my way, and I don't, a Best
Picture nomination would certainly go to Benh Zeitlin's «Beasts of the Southern Wild,» with its extraordinary lead performance by Quvenzhané Wallis as a young Louisiana girl named Hushpuppy.

Picture;
if Birdman wins it will be the first film in 34 years to win Best
Picture without a Film Editing
nomination.
If «The Florida Project» lands a best
picture Oscar
