research of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) and Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has shown that the inclusion of agroindustrial by - products in
pig feed can reduce the nitrous oxide emissions (N2O) of the slurry used as
manures up to 65 %.
The
research carried out by the Departments of Geological and Mining Engineering and Agricultural Production of UPM shows that the biochar produced from
manure of cattle,
pigs and chicken is an organic fertilizer with a high content of nutrients, stabilized organic material and high values of cation exchange capacity.
In 2004, cows,
pigs and other livestock expelled more than 13 million tons (12.2 megatons) of methane, from both
manure and escaping body gas, according to the study, published June 26 in the Journal of Geophysical
Research: Atmospheres.
