doing too much post processing in its photos, particularly with saturation — but in the new
Pixel cameras, machine learning and algorithmic processing is how Google hoped to make consistently great photos.
The
Pixel 2 doesn't quite have its own brand of special emoji, but it
does have AR capabilities built into the
camera, where characters from popular pieces of pop culture like Star Wars or Stranger Things show up from time to time.
Something amazing happened this year: Google didn't add a second
camera to either the
Pixel 2 or
Pixel 2 XL.
Similarly, the XZ2 Compact's low - light performance doesn't compare to the f / 1.5
camera on the Galaxy S9, but then not many phones compare favourably to the S9 and S9 +'s low light
camera, not even the iPhone X or
Pixel 2.
The front facing
camera of the
Pixel 2 is elevated over the 8MP shooter of the Galaxy S9, which tends to be softer and
does not yield as many consistently great photos.
The benefit though is that the
Pixel is one of the only phones out this year without a
camera bump, if the omission of OIS is the cause of this we don't know, but it is a case of «pick your poison».
That doesn't mean there aren't any reasons to choose the
Pixel 2: It's compact and well built, and has a fantastic
camera, not to mention first dibs on Android software updates pushed out by Google.
In the battle of the portraits, the single -
camera Pixel 2 XL (center)
does a tremendous job of keeping up with iPhone X (left) with just one
camera.

The
Pixel 2's
camera app doesn't have the same breadth of features as many of its competitors — there's no manual mode at all — but much of the magic happens behind the scenes.
The iPhone 8's
camera is no slouch, of course, but it's not quite in the same league as the
Pixel 2 — and you don't have to buy the XL to get all the good stuff.
While the handset doesn't necessarily bring any significant upgrades to Samsung's impeccable
camera, it
does sport the so - called Dual
Pixel technology, which enables for much better autofocusing than the regular PDAF solution.
We expect to see dual
cameras of varying quality in a host of smartphones this year, although we don't feel they're essential — the single - lens
Pixel 2 XL is our current pick for the best smartphone

camera rating is huge, the quality of photography you find on the
