by Rob Reiner

One especially unnerving scene places us at a swanky gala dinner that is interrupted
by a performance artist — played, brilliantly,
by the actor and stunt coordinator Terry Notary, whose motion - capture work in the recent «
Planet of the
Apes» films serves him ferociously well here.
I was looking forward to it more than any other summer movie this year, but
Planet of the
Apes turns out to be the worst movie
by a Great American Director since Brian De Palma slogged his way through Mission to Mars last year.
Supposedly based on a novel
by Pierre Boulle, which was also the basis for the 1968 original,
Planet of the
Apes begins with astronaut / anthropologist Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) aboard a training ship for monkeys.
Captive State is directed
by Rupert Wyatt (Rise
of the
Planet of the
Apes, The Gambler), who also co-wrote the original screenplay with Erica Beeney.
This was the effect «War for the
Planet of the
Apes» was going for, though Cooper isn't asking audiences to acknowledge his good taste, but simply giving them room, both physical and emotional (and further encouraged
by Max Richter's restrained tonal score), to project themselves onto the scene.
These are the confrontations offered up
by this exciting and stylish new film in the
Planet of the
Apes prequel franchise.
Billed as an origin's story, this remake
of the 1972 film Conquest
of the
Planet of the
Apes, features motion - capture performances and CGI primates created
by the digital wizardry
of Weta Digital, the company behind the Avatar characters.

of the
Planet of the
Apes is rated PG - 13

Soon, however, other X-Men form to stop this nonsense, including Raven / Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence, «American Hustle»), Scott Summers / Cyclops (Tye Sheridan, «Entertainment»), Hank McCoy / Beast (Nicholas Hoult, «Mad Max: Fury Road»), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner, «Game
of Thrones» TV series), Alex Summers / Havok (Lucas Till, «The Curse
of Downers Grove»), Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit - McPhee, «Dawn
of the
Planet of the
Apes») and Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver (Evan Peters, «The Lazarus Effect»), all led
by Charles Xavier and his ability to get inside people's thoughts and convince them to change their minds, or something like that.
by Walter Chaw A seminal year for film, 1968: Once Upon a Time in the West, Rosemary's Baby,
Planet of the
Apes, Night
of the Living Dead, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barbarella, If..., Targets, Faces, Danger: Diabolik... and, some would say, Mel Brooks's The Producers, a film back in the limelight thanks to the record - breaking, award - winning Broadway play on which it's based now coming out as an extraordinarily ill - advised feature film
of its own.
