practice, by Joyce Appleby, Margaret Jacob and Lynn Hunt, even began by pointing out that their own participation in the historical profession, as women
from nonelite social backgrounds, could not have happened without the intermingled social and intellectual
changes of recent decades (Telling the Truth About History).
Just as we may argue that there is a unity of aims, objectives and approach underlying and generating empirical science, however greatly scientific beliefs may
change and develop
from age to age, so we may argue that there is an analogous unity underlying and generating Christian belief and
practice.
People say things like «God never
changes» but his methods of engaging with humanity have certainly
changed,
from the extreme of the Levitical law with all its focus on foods, hygiene etc, to the point where we now have 2 laws — loving God and loving others, and the example of Jesus to show us what that means in
practice.
Let me state them again: faith that peace is possible, provision for peaceful
change from within the nations, international organization with the surrender of absolute national sovereignty, economic security for all men, faith in and understanding of and
practice of the democratic way of life, and a unifying spiritual world community.
However, the model has not been
changed, and most economic
practice continues to follow
from the model rather than
from the concerns of others about the environment.
Evangelism in the U.S. today, as
practiced by the denominations, is a very different thing
from what it has been in the past — and it is constantly
changing.
Second, to let you know of our plans to investigate the pertinent facts and make any necessary
changes to our
practices that would help prevent such an occurrence
from ever happening again.
As I have indicated,
change and transformation will be offered
from new voices and new perspective — new voices representing the pluralism within culture as a whole and within theological education, and new perspectives that allow us to speak about
practices and utopian visions within these

My hope is that the students will come away
from the talk with an appreciation for how their worldview class is preparing them to think critically about their faith and become familiar with Christian theology and
practice, but also how their worldview is bound to
change over the next few years — and how that's okay.
It is thus culturally, socially very convenient to bracket our peculiar beliefs and
practices with the proviso that, well, all that could
change with a word
from a more enlightened prophet.
The switch that most conferees are able to make
from monologue to dialogue in the course of the conference they will be able to apply in their
practice at home, because the
change becomes a part of them.
