The strongest Cannes Film Festival in recent memory — at least in the nine years I've been attending — concluded with an unusually satisfying distribution of
prizes by the Robert De Niro — led
jury (which also counted Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Johnnie To, and Olivier Assayas among its
members).
This, combined with the women's march last week in which the female
members of the
jury were joined on the red carpet to recognize that only 82 women have ever walked the red carpet as directors of an in competition film compared to 1,645 men, underlined that while two of the three female directors in competition (out of 21) won
prizes but the Palme still eludes a solo win by a woman filmmaker.

On the eve of the opening ceremony Wong Kar - wai led the
jury members including actor Tim Robbins, Oscar Winning Danish director Susanne Beir, Venice Silver Lion
prize winning Iranian director Shirin Neshat and others to meet the media and kicked off the 11 day long film festival.

prizes were awarded by a five -
member jury chaired by Manuel J. Borja - Villel, the director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Oliver Basciano, a

prize jury and international editor at ArtReview, said the shortlist reflected the times as it featured artists exploring «how did we get here... trying to work out how things got a bit messed up».
In 2005, she was a

Prize jury, which awarded the
prize to Simon Starling, whose main exhibit Shedboatshed was a wooden shed he had converted into a boat, sailed down the River Rhine and then turned back into the original shed.

prize jury are Fiona Bradley, director of Edinburgh's Fruitmarket Gallery; writer and critic Michael Bracewell; Thelma Golden, director and chief curator at the Studio Museum, Harlem; Miranda Sawyer, freelance broadcaster and writer; and Christoph Grunenberg, director of Tate Liverpool, who chairs the panel.
The eleven -
member jury gave the $ 55,000 ($ 66,074)
prize to Nauman for his «complex and outstanding» oeuvre, from video to sculpture to sound works.
The artists nominated for the
prize are indicated by a group of 16 curators chosen by the 4
jury members invited by the Culture Department of the City Council of Porto.
