During the 1960's a remarkable revival of the
thought of the contemporary American
process philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, took place in the
studies and dens of graduate students in philosophy.
While Chicago no longer exists as a center of
process thought and is to a lesser extent than before identified with philosophy - theology dialogue and interaction, it leaves a legacy worthy of
study by anyone interested in the history of these modes of inquiry in American religious
thought.
Whatever may be the case with the new theologians who are influenced by «secularization», by «the death of God», or the existentialist conceptuality provided by Heidegger — and here John Macquarrie is an exception, since his Principles of Christian Theology does include a consideration of the subject — not many theologians who prefer to approach the re-conception of Christian theology with the use of «
process thought» have published extended
studies of «the last things»; or, if they have, I have not come across them.
Finally, as a third field of
study with which
process -
thought must be related, I mention the new psychologies stemming from the work of Freud and Jung.
In concluding the lectures, I should like to suggest that
process -
thought requires supplementation from at least three other areas of contemporary
study and to urge that this supplementation will make it even more interesting to Christian thinkers.
