But there are many factors involved — the closing of the Ithmus of Panama or tectonic uplift in the Himalayas perhaps implicated in
Quaternary glaciation / deglaciation cycles.
This incredible natural wonder was created over an aeon during several periods of
quaternary glaciation.
The main trigger for
the Quaternary glaciation was the continuing fall in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere due to the weathering of the Himalayas.
The Quaternary glaciation started just a few million years ago — and is still going on.
The concomitant
quaternary glaciations on mars suggest response to changes to an external forcing, such as solar obliquity or precession, the concomitant changes to the martian prescape as of earth, to say obliquity would be remarkable coincidence of chance.
Not exact matches
So there were actually many overlapping
glaciations within the
Quaternary, each separately named: the Bavelian and Cromerian complexes of glacials and interglacials; the Elsterian glacial; the Holsteinian interglacial and the Saalian
glaciation, among others.
I remind you of the paper by Kukla et al and the special issue of
Quaternary Research in 1972, concluding that based on the comparison with the other interglacials we will enter soon in
glaciation (see the introduction of our papers to have a summary of that story).
