RIM's massive price cuts that saw the
tablet being
sold for an affordable $ 199.
RIM is still
soldering on with the PlayBook
tablet device while HP has already thrown in the towel.
RIM is also preparing to launch the BlackBerry PlayBook as its first
tablet offering this year, which could
sell as many as 6 million units during its first year of availability.
At $ 299,
RIM is hoping to
sell off the
tablets it is having the most trouble
selling; the 64 GB and 32 GB models.
It might be difficult for
RIM to
sell consumers its model if they are able to compare the
RIM tablet to an iPad sitting on another shelf.
It really seems with this announcement
RIM is going to do away with one of the largest
selling points of its
tablet and stick it to savvy owners to have more flexibility.
While this will surely be of a lot of use to those who are heavily addicted to their BlackBerry's,
RIM may have a hard time
selling the device to those who'd like to have a
tablet that functions on its own.
It also knocked a whopping 58 percent off a
RIM BlackBerry PlayBook 32 GB ($ 249), but it hasn't
sold out yet today — which I guess says a lot more about the
tablet than it does about eBay.
RIM says the PlayBook will be able to run Android 2.x apps (but significantly, not apps for Android 3.0, the
tablet version of Google's OS), and only those Android apps that are
sold via its AppWorld store; but the Android Player emulator that will enable this feat, along with the emulator that will run BlackBerry phone apps, won't be available until later this summer.
RIM had initially said it would launch the new BlackBerry 10 phones, which will use the same operating system as the company's poor -
selling PlayBook
tablet, early this year.
N4BB, however, speculates that the real reason for dumping the 16 GB
tablet boils down to value for
RIM, since «there is barely any profit on every 16 GB PlayBook
sold,» especially «given the price cuts putting the PlayBook to its relative production cost.»
RIM reported during its earnings call on Thursday that it only
sold 200,000 BlackBerry PlayBook
tablets into channels during its August quarter, after having shipped 500,000 units in the fiscal first quarter.
This follows the recent confirmation by the beleaguered platform and hardware developer that it will be taking steps to write down up to a staggering US$ 1 billion in unsold inventory across its current North American product line, which follows a similar writedown taken late last year for $ 400 million in unsold PlayBook inventory, which culminated in the short - term fire sale to employees and consumers while raising serious concerns regarding
RIM's capability to
sell the previously noncompetitive
tablets.

RIM faces its biggest competition in the
tablet arena from Apple, whose iPad has
